By Thy Grace: Snatam Kaur'sTwenty-Five Years of Mantra

In February 2019, a kirtan singer in a white turban walked onto the stage at the Grammy Premiere Ceremony in Los Angeles and did the least Grammy thing imaginable: she asked several thousand industry professionals to breathe. Snatam Kaur's Beloved was up for Best New Age Album that year, and the nomination made a kind of official what her audiences had known for two decades — that the quiet woman with the harmonium had built one of the most durable careers in American devotional music, one church hall and one chant at a time. "If I have any issue, it's like a little medicine toolbox," she told New Hampshire Public Radio during Grammy week. "I just take out a chant and start chanting it."

The Long Road to the Harmonium

The career turns twenty-five this year, and the arc behind it is longer still. Born in Trinidad, Colorado in 1972 and raised in California, Snatam grew up inside the music — her mother is the sacred-chant singer Prabhu Nam Kaur — and reached for it early. "Just after my parents got a divorce and I was in my early teens, I remember chanting this every night," she recalled in a Sounds True interview, "and it was just so powerful for me in that time." A biochemistry degree from Mills College suggested one kind of life; the harmonium won. She signed with Spirit Voyage Records in 2000, released her debut Prem in 2001, and spent the following decade on the road — including the Celebrate Peace tour, which ran from 2003 to 2009 across multiple continents and turned a recording artist into something closer to a traveling congregation.

The records kept coming — the Thomas Barquee-produced albums of the Spirit Voyage years, Heart of the Universe with pianist Peter Kater in 2012, the Jamshied Sharifi-produced Beloved and its Grammy nomination in 2019, all the way to 2024's Heartflow. Twenty-three years separate the first album from the latest. The voice is unmistakably the same.

A Craft That Starts in the Spine

Ask Snatam about technique and she'll point somewhere other than the throat. "Chanting and singing is not about having a trained voice," she told Yoga Chicago. "This kind of chanting comes from your spinal cord." It is a working philosophy, not a metaphor — her practice is domestic, daily, and unglamorous. "My family and I don't go to sleep without chanting," she said in the Sounds True conversation. "It's like more of a practical thing for me. I don't do it because I think I should. I do it because it's a cleansing experience." The repertoire she draws on is the Sikh sacred tradition, sung in Gurmukhi — and she is unbothered that most of her audience doesn't speak it. "People may not understand the words that we are singing," she once acknowledged, "because the songs are in the language of the Sikhs." The room understands anyway.

What She Watches From the Stage

Twenty-five years of touring has given her a connoisseur's eye for the moment a room lets go. "In concert after concert you can see the people opening up," she told Yoga Chicago. "That's when I go into praying for the planet." She makes no clinical claims for any of it — just an observation, offered with a scientist's modesty and a believer's confidence: "Even if you don't consciously have a healing experience, there's a little shift of consciousness, always — no matter what."

The Bow: By Thy Grace, 25 Years of Mantra

Which is the spirit of the anniversary tour now crossing the continent. By Thy Grace: 25 Years of Mantra — with her current ensemble of Ram Dass Khalsa, Bruno Justi, and Sukhmani Rayat — is framed by Snatam not as a victory lap but as an act of gratitude. "This tour is a bow," she said in the tour announcement, "a bow to the grace of these mantras and to the healing we've experienced together while chanting them." And: "When we chant them collectively, that healing magnifies and becomes even more powerful."

The fall North American leg opens September 25 in Santa Cruz and winds down the coast through Santa Barbara, San Diego, Portland, and San Rafael, then heads north and east — Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal — before two-night stands in New York (October 13-14) and Austin (October 16-17). Two nights in the same city is its own review: one evening with Snatam Kaur tends to make people want a second.

Frequently Asked Questions

Snatam Kaur is a Grammy-nominated American singer of sacred chant, born in Trinidad, Colorado in 1972 and raised in California, whose career in Sikh devotional music spans twenty-five years.

She grew up inside the music — her mother is the sacred-chant singer Prabhu Nam Kaur — and turned to chanting early, recalling in a Sounds True interview that she chanted every night through her parents' divorce in her early teens. After a biochemistry degree from Mills College, she signed with Spirit Voyage Records in 2000 and released her debut album Prem in 2001. Twenty-three years and many albums later — through the Thomas Barquee-produced Spirit Voyage years, Heart of the Universe with pianist Peter Kater, and the Grammy-nominated Beloved — she remains one of the most durable figures in American devotional music.

By Thy Grace: 25 Years of Mantra is Snatam Kaur's 2025–2026 anniversary tour across Europe and North America, marking a quarter century since her recording career began.

Snatam frames the tour not as a retrospective but as an act of gratitude — 'This tour is a bow,' she said in the announcement, 'a bow to the grace of these mantras and to the healing we've experienced together while chanting them.' She tours with her current ensemble of Ram Dass Khalsa, Bruno Justi, and Sukhmani Rayat. The fall 2026 North American leg runs from late September through mid-October, opening in Santa Cruz and closing with two-night stands in New York and Austin.

The fall 2026 North American leg runs September 25 to October 17: Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Portland, San Rafael, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, then two nights each in New York and Austin.

The venues tell their own story — theatres, churches, and community halls rather than arenas: the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz (September 25), the Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara, The Unity Center in San Diego, First Congregational UCC in Portland, Angelico Hall in San Rafael, St. Andrew's Wesley in Vancouver, East End United in Toronto, Centre Pierre-Péladeau in Montreal, St. Paul & St. Andrew in New York (October 13–14), and Unity Church of the Hills in Austin (October 16–17). Two-night stands in the same city are their own review: one evening tends to make people want a second.

Yes — her album Beloved, produced by Jamshied Sharifi, was nominated for Best New Age Album at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019, and she performed at the Grammy Premiere Ceremony that year.

The nomination made official what her audiences had known for two decades. During Grammy week she told New Hampshire Public Radio how ordinary the practice behind the music is: 'If I have any issue, it's like a little medicine toolbox. I just take out a chant and start chanting it.' The Grammy stage moment — a kirtan singer in a white turban asking an industry audience to breathe — remains one of the more memorable collisions of the devotional world and the mainstream music business.

Primarily Gurmukhi, the sacred script of the Sikh tradition, alongside English — and she is unbothered that most of her audience doesn't speak it.

'People may not understand the words that we are singing because the songs are in the language of the Sikhs,' she has acknowledged. Her repertoire draws on Sikh sacred chant — mantras like Guru Ram Das Guru, which she once described as 'the major forklift to bring me out of any kind of negative energies.' The room understands anyway: repetition, melody, and intention carry what translation can't.

Less a performance than a shared practice — audiences chant along, and the evening moves from quiet contemplation toward collective celebration.

Twenty-five years of touring has given her a connoisseur's eye for the moment a room lets go. 'In concert after concert you can see the people opening up,' she told Yoga Chicago. 'That's when I go into praying for the planet.' She makes no clinical claims for any of it — just an observation offered with a scientist's modesty: 'Even if you don't consciously have a healing experience, there's a little shift of consciousness, always — no matter what.'

Nightly, as a family practice — 'My family and I don't go to sleep without chanting,' she has said. 'I don't do it because I think I should. I do it because it's a cleansing experience.'

Her teaching on technique points away from performance entirely: 'Chanting and singing is not about having a trained voice. This kind of chanting comes from your spinal cord,' she told Yoga Chicago. The domestic, unglamorous dailiness of the practice — chant as hygiene rather than artistry — is the foundation the twenty-five-year career rests on, and it's what she invites audiences into at every stop of the By Thy Grace tour.

Prem, released in 2001 on Spirit Voyage Records — the label she signed with in 2000, marking the start of the career the By Thy Grace tour now celebrates.

From Prem the discography runs through the Spirit Voyage years with producer Thomas Barquee (including 2004's Grace), the Celebrate Peace tour era of 2003–2009 that carried her across multiple continents, Heart of the Universe with Peter Kater in 2012, the Grammy-nominated Beloved in 2019, and 2024's Heartflow. Twenty-three years separate the first album from the latest; the voice is unmistakably the same.
